Welcome to The Captains log. This is a weekly update, archiving the previous weekend. The Captains Log is published every Tuesday following the week and includes a recap of the weekend, a video (hosted by our YouTube channel), and photos recounting the memories made. The images are shot, edited, and stored as High Definition. In order to save bandwidth, the images are condensed into web format on this page. As the autumn light stretches long across the Channel Islands Harbor, there’s a rhythm that settles into these October days — a balance of calm seas, lively docks, and the constant call of the harbor’s winged residents. The week rolled in quietly, but by the weekend, the water was alive with motion, laughter, and the hum of life that makes this place feel like home.
Thursday
The week began with smooth sailing and calm waters — the kind of day every captain hopes for. A warm and curious family joined the safari, their excitement matching the sparkle of the harbor. The great blue herons, always the watchful locals, made their appearance, strutting along the docks like old friends keeping tabs on the operation. They’ve earned their names now We named “Bluey” and “Blue-Cheese” Future Adventurers will be introduced to these birds by their names.
Friday
The harbor stirred early with the sound of construction and the clang of progress. The view from the deck showed a harbor in motion — workers, boats, and gulls all moving in their own rhythm. Sometimes it’s good to stand back and watch the working heartbeat of this place. Even when the boat’s at rest, there’s life all around.
Sunday
The morning light broke through a thin fog, painting the water in gold. Tours were full, spirits were high, and the wildlife seemed to sense it — sea lions playing tag near the breakwater, cormorants drying their wings on channel markers, and the pelicans gliding low like shadows over the surface. Dredging continued in the background, but it couldn’t drown out the laughter and awe of passengers spotting harbor life up close.
The week closed with a flourish — a string of lively tours filled with excited guests, local families, and that unmistakable energy that comes when the harbor community gathers. Channel Islands Harbor Photography and Friends held a giveaway for a 6-person trip on the upcoming Holiday Home Tours. The giveaway drew smiles. We held the drawing by spinning a wheel to determine the winner. There were 60 participants. We went Facebook live, so if you want to view the tour visit CIHPF facebook page. The herons made one last cameo as if to sign off the week, keeping a quiet watch from their favorite piling.
As the sun dipped behind the masts and the last reflection danced across the ripples, the harbor exhaled — a deep, contented breath after days of motion and memory. Out here, no two days are ever the same, but each one leaves its mark — and this week, the mark was a good one.
