Channel Islands Marine Safari Adventures
What an unforgettable stretch of days this was on the water. We started the weekend with a lively group of ladies celebrating a birthday. Their energy was contagious, and from the moment we left the slip, the adventure was in full swing. Mallard ducks were flying south right before our eyes, a seasonal reminder that fall is here. As always, the American coot held his post near the Channel Islands Boulevard bridge, while a couple of pelicans lounged on the newly installed docks-to-be. We admired classic vessels like the Mystic Whaler before heading out to a breathtaking sunset.
It also happened to be the opening night of the 2025 California spiny lobster season. Recreational fishers were thick around the break wall, lights dancing across the water. It was a very productive start. Harbor Patrol made their rounds, ensuring everyone kept within the rules. Our adventurers and I shared stories, laughter, and a night cruise back to the slip that capped off a memory-filled evening.
Saturday brought a special group courtesy of our good friend Omar, a local boater and resident of the harbor. He was hosting out-of-town guests and sent them our way for a safari adventure. Mother Nature did not disappoint—our group was graced by a pod of dolphins gliding past at sunset. As if choreographed, the Scarlet Belle, decked out for what looked like a wedding, her graceful presence adding magic to the scene. At Sea Lion Cove, we spotted snowy egrets, though the sea lions themselves were missing—at least there. Down by the sea bass enhancement pens, they were very much present. Despite attempts by harbor administration to fence them out with plastic webbing, the sea lions made short work of it. In true sea lion fashion, once they breached the barrier, the dock was theirs.
Sunday’s group of adventurers were out-of-towners who had hoped to take an Island Packers trip, only to find it sold out. Lucky for us, they chose the marine safari, and I believe they left with no regrets. Before boarding, I caught sight of a red-tailed hawk circling above, which likely explained the quiet skies. But once we pushed away from Seabridge Marina, the birdlife returned in full force: mallards, snowy egrets, blue herons, gulls, and more—safe from that hunter’s gaze.
We revisited the sea bass pen, and once again it was clear: sea lions one, fencing zero. Their persistence is remarkable, if a little destructive. Down by Cisco’s Sportfishing, the docks and pilings were alive with great egrets, night herons, gulls, and pelicans. The setting sun was hot and brilliant, promising a spectacular show. And then came the true highlight: an alert of a SpaceX launch from Vandenberg. We timed it perfectly—sunset glowing on the horizon as the rocket tore through the sky, leaving behind a jellyfish-like orb of light. The sonic booms echoed across the water, sending chills through the crowd. Just before the launch, we even witnessed two male sea lions battling fiercely at Sea Lion Cove, a raw display of nature’s drama.
From birthdays to dolphins, weddings to rocket launches, this weekend had it all. Each adventure reminded me why these waters are so special: they are alive, unpredictable, and always ready to create moments that last a lifetime.
End of Log.
