Ahoy adventurers!
What an incredible few days out on the water this weekend! From July 31st through August 3rd, we hosted some unforgettable Marine Safaris— and let me tell you, the harbor was alive with action, laughter, and wildlife galore.
Our first group was a lively bunch with great energy and even better snacks! They came prepared with a full spread — fresh vegetables, hearty sandwiches, homemade cookies, and even bacon-wrapped treats. Of course, in the spirit of hospitality (and hunger), Captain Dave had to sample the goods. Approved!
We cruised the harbor and spotted our regular feathered friends — elegant herons and watchful egrets. But the real excitement came when we reached the bait dock. A great egret snagged a fish and suddenly found itself being chased by a gang of squawking seagulls — a real National Geographic moment! And yes — the sea lions have returned in full force. They’re back, they’re bold, and they’re owning the docks like celebrities on a red carpet.
Next up, we welcomed a group visiting from out of the area, and their excitement was contagious. The harbor rolled out its finest wildlife display — no less than seven different bird species in a single tour! Egrets, snowy egrets, blue herons, cormorants, western grebes, pelicans, seagulls… it was a full-on avian parade.
Out near the mouth of the harbor, we caught a glimpse of the Coast Guard powering back in — full throttle — while birds danced on the surface. But the real showstopper? A small pod of dolphins less than a football field from shore. We tailed them for a bit, captured some fantastic photos, and took in the magic of seeing dolphins play just off the beach. That moment? Pure ocean joy.
On our return, we cruised past boaters enjoying the sunshine and spotted one of the Channel Islands’ own — legendary urchin diver Justin — with Tina from the fuel dock casting lines off F/V Extreme. Local color at its finest.
We made our way to the sea bass pens and slowly glided back toward the slip, enjoying the view of the harbor homes glowing in the late afternoon light.
Our next group brought wide eyes and open hearts. A returning family brought new members along, eager to share the experience — and they were not disappointed. We explored “Safari Lane” where our favorite harbor “giraffe” and “gorilla” still stand guard at the edge of the county zone. Plenty of paddle boarders, smiling boaters, and, once again, the sea lions were out — but this time they were posing like seasoned models. One curious sea lion even swam right up to the boat, checking us out like he was thinking of joining the crew.
As we made our way past the Maritime Museum, there she was — the Mystic Whaler, standing tall in all her splendor. A true sight to see.
To close it out, the sunset on the final evening was something out of a dream — soft pinks and purples reflecting off the glassy water, casting a calm over the harbor and wrapping the weekend in serenity.
Smiles, laughter, wildlife, and connection — it was all here. Another fantastic chapter in the books.
Until next time,
